Ela Bhatt has devoted her life to addressing poverty in India. A trained lawyer, activist and Ghandian ,Ela is the founder of the Self-Employed Women's Association of India(1972) the SEWA believing that Poverty is a crime.

She is a member of the group The Elders. Kofi Annan serves as Chair of the Elders.This group was initially set up by the invitation to world leaders to tackle some of the worlds' most challenging problems, by Nelson Mandela, Graca Machel and Desmond Tutu. Ela Bhatt is involved especially in equality for women and girls, including the issue of child marriage and poverty.

She has won several national and international awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award (1977), Right Livelihood Award (1984) and the Padma Bhushan (1986).
She has won the Indira Ghandi Prize for Peace and founded numerous institutions totally dedicated to increasing the quality of the lives of the poor women of India.
